Mazda CX-5 for African Roads: Buying Guide

AJAutocom Japan, YokohamaUpdated 1 October 20264 min read

The Mazda CX-5 is a strong choice for African roads if you want a comfortable, well-equipped crossover for mixed city and highway driving. Choose the engine and drivetrain carefully: the diesel suits long trips, petrol suits short city runs, and AWD helps on wet or loose roads.

Key takeaways

  • Two generations dominate the export market: first generation (2012–2016) and second generation (2017 onwards).
  • Engines in Japan: 2.0 L and 2.5 L petrol, 2.5 L turbo petrol (second generation) and 2.2 L diesel.
  • The diesel needs regular longer drives and good-quality fuel; petrol is simpler for short trips.
  • For Kenya in 2026, only second-generation cars first registered in 2019 or later qualify.

Why the CX-5 works on African roads

The CX-5 rides higher than a sedan, has a composed suspension and a practical five-seat cabin with a decent boot.

It handles potholed city roads and long highway trips well. It is a road-focused crossover, though, not a body-on-frame 4×4. For regular deep mud, sand or river crossings, a proper off-roader is a better tool.

Front-wheel drive is fine for paved roads. All-wheel drive adds traction on wet, gravel or dirt roads. Our guide to 4WD vs 2WD explains the trade-off.

CX-5 generations and engines

Knowing the generation helps you compare cars and plan parts.

Generation Years (Japan) Engines (Japan) Drivetrain
1st (KE) 2012–2016 2.0 L petrol, 2.5 L petrol, 2.2 L diesel FWD or AWD; mostly 6-speed automatic
2nd (KF) 2017 onwards (announced December 2016) 2.0 L petrol, 2.5 L petrol, 2.5 L turbo petrol, 2.2 L diesel FWD or AWD; mostly 6-speed automatic

Mazda revealed a new third-generation CX-5 in 2025. Almost all CX-5s on the export market today are first- or second-generation cars.

Many CX-5s come with Mazda’s i-Activsense safety features, such as automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring. Equipment varies by grade and year, so check the listing.

Petrol or diesel?

Pick the engine that matches how you drive, not only the fuel price.

  • 2.2 L diesel (XD): strong pulling power and suited to long highway trips. It has a diesel particulate filter (DPF) that needs regular longer drives to clean itself. Short city trips only can cause DPF and carbon problems.
  • 2.0 L petrol: simple and suited to city driving.
  • 2.5 L petrol: more relaxed with a full car or on hills.
  • 2.5 L turbo petrol: the most powerful option, found on higher grades of the second generation.

Before buying a diesel, ask a local mechanic whether good-quality, low-sulphur diesel is reliably available where you drive and whether they can service Mazda’s Skyactiv-D engine.

How to get better fuel economy

Real-world consumption depends mostly on how you drive and maintain the car.

  • Accelerate and brake smoothly, and avoid long idling.
  • Keep tyres at the correct pressure and the wheels aligned.
  • Change oil, air filter and spark plugs on schedule. Dirty filters make the engine work harder.
  • Remove heavy items you don’t need and avoid roof racks when not in use.
  • Use good-quality fuel from busy stations.
  • Use Sport mode only when you need it, for example when overtaking.

Running and maintenance tips

A CX-5 that is serviced on time is a pleasant long-term car.

  • In dusty conditions, change the air filter and engine oil more often than the standard interval.
  • On diesels, check the engine oil level regularly. A rising oil level can mean fuel is mixing with the oil and needs attention.
  • Check the suspension and tyres after rough roads.
  • Heat shortens battery life, especially on cars with the i-Stop system.

What to check before you buy

Check the paperwork first, then the car.

  1. Age rule: confirm your country’s limit and how it is counted. For Kenya, see our Kenya age limit guide.
  2. Auction sheet: look at the grade, repair marks and mileage. Our auction sheet guide explains the codes.
  3. Engine type: decide diesel or petrol before you compare prices.
  4. Warning lights: ask whether any engine, DPF or i-Stop warnings are noted.
  5. Drivetrain: confirm FWD or AWD in the listing.

Pay only to a bank account in Japan in the name “Autocom Japan Inc”. Our guide on how to avoid scams explains the warning signs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import a Mazda CX-5 to Kenya in 2026?

Yes, if it was first registered in 2019 or later, which means a second-generation car. Ask our Mombasa or Nairobi office to confirm the date before you pay.

Is the CX-5 diesel good for Africa?

It suits drivers who do regular long trips and can get good-quality diesel. If you mostly drive short city trips, a petrol CX-5 is usually the safer choice.

Is the CX-5 good off-road?

It handles gravel and dirt roads well, especially with AWD, but it is not built for serious off-roading.

How does the CX-5 compare with the RAV4 and X-Trail?

See our CX-5 vs RAV4 vs X-Trail comparison. If you want something smaller, read CX-5 vs CX-30.
