Importing a car from Japan to Tanzania: rules for 2026

AJAutocom Japan, YokohamaRules checked 1 October 2026

Yes, you can import a used car of any age from Japan to Tanzania; there is no age ban, but older cars pay extra age-based excise duty. Every car needs a pre-shipment inspection in Japan by EAA Co., Ltd. for TBS before it ships to Dar es Salaam.

Autocom Japan has exported 900,000+ cars to 100+ countries. Our Dar es Salaam sales office and document centre help you choose a car, we arrange the EAA inspection and export documents in Japan, and our document centre can tell you when the original documents will reach your clearing agent.

Age rule

There is no age ban, but older vehicles pay additional age-based excise duty. The Finance Act 2026 (in force 1 July 2026) reorganised the age bands; ask TRA or your clearing agent how the age of your car is counted.

No age ban for any vehicle type; age affects excise duty only.

Inspection in Japan

TBS requires a pre-shipment inspection under its PVoC programme. In Japan it is done by EAA Co., Ltd., which issues the Certificate of Roadworthiness.
