Yes, you can import a used car from Japan to Kenya in 2026 if it is right-hand drive and its year of first registration is 2019 or later. Every car must pass a QISJ inspection in Japan and get a Certificate of Roadworthiness before it ships to Mombasa.
Autocom Japan has exported 900,000+ cars to 100+ countries. Our Mombasa and Nairobi offices help you pick a car that meets the rule, we arrange the QISJ inspection and export documents in Japan, and we confirm the first registration date before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
Can I import a 2018 car to Kenya in 2026?
No. In 2026 KEBS only accepts cars whose year of first registration is 2019 or later. Cars with 2018 first registration had to arrive by 31 December 2025.
Which year counts: manufacture or registration?
The year of first registration counts, as shown on the Japanese export certificate. Ask our office to confirm the exact date before you pay.
When will the 2027 cut-off be announced?
It had not been announced on 1 October 2026. KEBS announced the last two cut-offs in November, so check before buying a car that will arrive in 2027.
Who inspects cars for Kenya in Japan?
QISJ (Quality Inspection Services Inc. Japan), appointed by KEBS. It issues the Certificate of Roadworthiness that Kenya requires.
How is import duty worked out?
KRA works it out from the car's value on its CRSP list, engine size and age. Use KRA's official tools or ask a licensed clearing agent; we do not quote government charges.
