The Mazda CX-80 is a large three-row SUV that Mazda launched in 2024. In Japan it went on sale in October 2024 and takes over the three-row role of the CX-8, with a 3.3-litre six-cylinder diesel, a diesel mild hybrid and a 2.5-litre plug-in hybrid.
Key takeaways
- The CX-80 is the long, three-row sister of the CX-60, built on Mazda’s rear-wheel-drive-based large platform.
- Japanese cars come as XD (diesel), XD-HYBRID (diesel mild hybrid) and PHEV (plug-in hybrid), with six- and seven-seat layouts.
- It is new, so used supply is limited, but its age is no problem for age-limited markets such as Kenya or Zimbabwe.
- Before buying a modern diesel or plug-in hybrid, check fuel quality and service support in your country.
History
Mazda revealed the CX-80 in 2024 as part of its large SUV family with the CX-60, CX-70 and CX-90. The CX-60 and CX-80 are the narrower models aimed at Japan and Europe; the CX-70 and CX-90 are the wider models for North America.
In Japan the CX-80 took over from the CX-8, which ended production in 2023.
Design and interior
The CX-80 follows Mazda’s “Kodo” design language: a long bonnet, clean surfaces and slim LED lights.
It measures 4,990 mm long, 1,890 mm wide and 1,710 mm high, on a 3,120 mm wheelbase. That is 250 mm longer than the CX-60, with the extra length going mainly into the wheelbase and third-row space.
Inside, you can choose six seats (two second-row captain’s chairs) or seven seats, depending on grade. Higher grades use materials such as Nappa leather. The third row can fold flat to increase cargo space.
Equipment includes a central display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Mazda’s i-Activsense driver-assistance systems, such as adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking. Exact features vary by grade, so check the listing.
Engines and drive
| Japanese name | Powertrain | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| XD | 3.3-litre straight-six turbo-diesel (e-SKYACTIV D 3.3) | Rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive |
| XD-HYBRID | 3.3-litre diesel with mild-hybrid system | All-wheel drive |
| PHEV | 2.5-litre petrol four-cylinder plug-in hybrid | All-wheel drive; can drive short distances on electric power |
All versions use an automatic gearbox. The all-wheel-drive system helps on gravel, mud and wet roads, but the CX-80 is a road-focused SUV, not a serious off-roader.

Grades in Japan
Japanese grades are built around the three powertrains. XD cars include S Package, L Package and Exclusive Mode; XD-HYBRID and PHEV cars include higher Premium grades with Sports or Modern interior themes. Seat layout depends on the grade, so always confirm six or seven seats on the listing.
Import age rules
Because the CX-80 was launched in 2024, it meets Kenya’s rule (cars first registered on or after 1 January 2019) and Zimbabwe’s under-10-years rule. Other countries have their own rules, so check with our import age checker.
What to check before you buy
- Fuel and servicing: modern diesels have exhaust after-treatment that needs good-quality diesel. Ask a local mechanic or dealer whether they can service this engine.
- Plug-in hybrid charging: a PHEV works best if you can charge it regularly. Check the charging cable is included.
- Seat layout: confirm six or seven seats before you pay.
- Recalls and updates: ask whether any recall or software work has been done on the car.
- Condition report: even a nearly new car should have its auction sheet or inspection report checked; our auction sheet guide explains the grades.
