Importing a car from Japan to the USA: rules for 2026

A Japan-market car that does not meet US safety standards can be imported to the USA once it is at least 25 years old, counted from its date of manufacture (NHTSA). Age rule

A vehicle at least 25 years old can be imported without meeting US safety standards (FMVSS). The 25 years run from the date of manufacture shown on the maker's label or proven by documents.
