The Toyota Alphard is Toyota’s large luxury minivan, sold in Japan since 2002. There are four generations; the current one arrived in 2023, and the third generation (2015–2023) is the one most buyers look for on the used market.
Key takeaways
- Four generations: 2002–2008, 2008–2015, 2015–2023 and 2023 onwards.
- Most Alphards have seven or eight seats, sliding rear doors and a strong focus on rear-passenger comfort.
- The Vellfire is a closely related twin from the second generation onwards.
- For Kenya you need a car first registered in 2019 or later, which means a late third-generation or fourth-generation car.
1. Alphard generations explained
Each Alphard generation has been bigger and more luxurious than the last. Engines changed over time, and hybrid versions were offered in every generation.
| Generation | Years (Japan) | Main petrol engines | Hybrid |
|---|---|---|---|
| First (AH10) | 2002–2008 | 2.4-litre four-cylinder, 3.0-litre V6 | 2.4-litre hybrid |
| Second (AH20) | 2008–2015 | 2.4-litre four-cylinder, 3.5-litre V6 | 2.4-litre hybrid |
| Third (AH30) | 2015–2023 | 2.5-litre four-cylinder, 3.5-litre V6 | 2.5-litre hybrid with E-Four all-wheel drive |
| Fourth (AH40) | 2023 onwards | 2.5-litre four-cylinder | 2.5-litre hybrid |
The third generation was facelifted at the end of 2017 with new styling and updated safety equipment. The Vellfire, launched in 2008, shares the Alphard’s body and engines with different styling.

2. Design and interior
The Alphard is a tall, boxy minivan with a large chrome grille and power sliding doors on both sides. It is designed first for the people in the back.
Depending on grade, the second row has either a bench (eight seats) or two large captain’s chairs (seven seats). Top grades add reclining “executive” seats with leg rests, rear entertainment screens and rear climate controls. Because of this, many Alphards in Japan are used as chauffeur cars as well as family cars.
The third row folds to the sides or into the floor area, depending on generation, to create luggage space.
3. Engines and driving
The four-cylinder petrol engines are adequate for a vehicle this size. The 3.5-litre V6 in the second and third generations is smoother and stronger. The hybrid versions use Toyota’s hybrid system, and most have E-Four, where an electric motor drives the rear wheels for extra traction.
The Alphard is built for tarmac. It rides comfortably, but it is long and heavy with modest ground clearance, so it is not suited to rough tracks.
4. Import age rules
Kenya accepts only cars first registered on or after 1 January 2019, and the 2027 cut-off has not yet been announced. Zimbabwe does not allow used vehicles 10 years or older from the date of manufacture. Older first- and second-generation Alphards are therefore only an option in countries without such limits. What to check before you buy
- Power sliding doors: open and close both doors several times; motors and cables can wear.
- Hybrid system: on hybrids, ask about any warning lights and check the hybrid battery condition is noted in the inspection.
- Interior wear: check the leather or fabric, seat motors and rear-seat functions, especially on cars used as chauffeur vehicles.
- Suspension and tyres: heavy vans wear bushes, shock absorbers and tyres; look for uneven tyre wear.
- Grade and seats: confirm seven or eight seats, 2WD or 4WD, and engine type on the listing.
- Auction sheet: check grade and repair marks with our auction sheet decoder.
