Yes, you can import a used car from Japan to Jamaica if it is no more than 6 years old by model year (10 years for some commercial vehicles). You need an import permit from the Jamaica Trade Board through JSWIFT and an Auto Terminal Japan pre-shipment inspection before the car ships.
Autocom Japan has exported 900,000+ cars to 100+ countries. Our head office in Yokohama helps you choose a car inside the limit, arranges the ATJ inspection, and sends the invoice and export certificate you need for your permit.
Age rule
Cars, station wagons and SUVs may be up to 6 years old, counted by model year (from the VIN or, for Japan-market models, the chassis number). For the model year that ages out, the Trade Board's November 2025 notice accepted permit applications until 31 January and required clearance by 31 March; check the current notice.
Cars (sedans up to 5 seats, station wagons, SUVs up to 8 seats), buses up to 8 seats and pickups up to 1,500 kg: 6 years. Pickups/small trucks 1,501–3,000 kg, panel vans, window vans, buses 9–14 seats: 10 years. Returning residents: 10 years.
Inspection in Japan
Every vehicle from Japan must pass an ATJ pre-shipment inspection; without the PSIC no permit is issued. ATJ checks model year, odometer, first registration, flood or structural damage and contamination.
Duty, taxes and official rules
We never quote government duty or tax — it depends on the car and changes often. Use the official pages below or ask a licensed clearing agent.
