Importing a car from Japan to Guyana: rules for 2026

AJAutocom Japan, YokohamaRules checked 1 October 2026

Yes, you can import a used car of any age from Japan to Guyana; the age limit was removed in October 2020, and age now only affects the tax band. Since February 2025 every used vehicle needs a Vehicle Inspection Certificate from Auto Terminal Japan, or it may not be released.

Autocom Japan has exported 900,000+ cars to 100+ countries. Our head office in Yokohama helps you choose a car, arranges the ATJ inspection, and prepares a bill of lading with all the vehicle details GRA needs.

Age rule

The old ban on vehicles 8 years or older was removed on 1 October 2020. Age only decides the tax band (under 4 years, or 4 years and older), counted to 1 January of the year of import.

No age ban; age affects the tax band only. Budget 2026 changed tax treatment for some categories — check GRA.

Inspection in Japan

Since 1 February 2025 all used vehicles need a pre-shipment inspection; Auto Terminal Japan is the only authorised issuer. The certificate is uploaded to ASYCUDA with the declaration.
